University_of_Warwick_logo_2015_with_descriptor.svgABERYSTWYTH Student Media are adding their names to a list of student newspapers across the UK participating in a national student survey on racism, following an incident at Warwick University on the 5th April 2016.

On the 5th April 2016 a Warwick biomedical science student Faramade Ifaturoti posted an image of a bunch of bananas with two offensive terms scrawled on them in black marker to Twitter:

The tweet ended up being shared thousands of times across the social media platform, and a solidarity campaign across social media began. #WeStandWithFara trended across social media platforms, and Warwick University responded by saying that it would be investigating the incident “as a matter of urgency”.

The Warwick student newspaper The Boar launched the survey, which aims to record students’ experiences of racism in a “collaborative attempt” to understand the frequency and extent of such incidents on campuses across the nation. Additionally the survey attempts to get an insight into how these incidents were dealt with by university management and Students’ Unions.

Other student newspapers involved in the survey include: Warwick, Southampton, Manchester, University College London, Cardiff and Durham.

The survey can be found here and only students registered in the UK can participate.
